Pros & Cons

  • Working on products that make a difference to peoples lives. Support network. Grad network. The new CSL Melbourne building and labs. Opportunities to grow. Personal development. 8 month (longer) rotations allow you to delve deeper
  • Hand on experiences, the company/industry as a whole is something I've been passionate about my whole life, meeting lots of different people, being challenged intellectually daily and contributing to higher level issues
  • Flexibility and support from other employees. The salary is also a plus and tends to increase every year.
  • Large graduate cohort allows for strong support network. Global growth company allows for many opportunities for career progression. Working on projects that have a direct positive social influence.
  • The people at the company are amazing. They are super friendly and always open to helping out when they can. I like that they allow graduates to have responsibility and learn through experience and mistakes.
  • Due to the nature of the business, there can be a lot going on at certain times and a lot of urgent tasks that can put people under pressure.
  • Everyone has lots of conflicting priorities, so it can be challenging to try and get all the relevant stakeholders engaged in some projects.
  • Lots of procedural hurdles to get tasks over the line.
  • Too much paperwork
  • It can be disorganised at times and difficult to get information from people in a timely manner.

As a graduate, you have a 2 year program where you are able to rotate to different areas in your stream. After this, you must apply for a role internally, however, when being recruited as a graduate, they take into account the potential career opportunities 2 years ahead to ensure a role is available.

I was a participant in the Red Kite Challenge (which is a project run by 2nd year graduates where they develop ideas to raise money for a children's charity).

Culture

Culture
Very casual, fairly flat structure. Everyone wants to support each other. The culture is very friendly and open. Most people are happy for you to organise a chat to talk about their role or career. The hierarchy is clear, but there is a level of respect amongst everyone, and all the leaders in the company are very approachable. Due to the nature of the products we're making, collaboration is a necessity to ensure work is done properly. This often involves a lot of meetings or messages between many people, so teamwork is a big part of the culture. While at my level there is a good work-life balance, I can see that at higher levels work-life balance can be difficult. People are generally friendly and work mostly well together.

Diversity
Communications regarding diversity and inclusion are regularly sent to us, especially with events coming up. In terms of recruitment, there is a lot of work going into retaining employees and upskilling if required. Promotions are also pretty common as many people move roles. Not too aware on the programs in place. However, there are upcoming items in place to attract applicants from less privileged backgrounds into the business.

Mix of project management and technical engineering work: Equipment procurement. Drafting engineering documents (alarms list, functional and design specifications for equipment). On site works (managing construction, commissioning activities)

My immediate manager and the department manager are very approachable and usually happy to answer questions if they have time. They also are private about any issues that I raise and usually can address these issues.

Office Work Environment
Office spaces are very good, sit-stand desks, two monitors, etc. Showers, canteen, bike spaces, toilets, air conditioning and all other amenities are very good. Location of Broadmeadows and Tullamarine is poor but Melbourne city and Parkville sites are very good. Relaxed smart casual dress.

Recruitment
Although there are lots of stages to the interview process, CSL was able to provide quick feedback and I wasnt left waiting to hear back if I had proceeded for a long time. The interview and assessment centre was conducted online and I heard back about the job later that same day. Understand company values and exactly what the company does. Focus on the company's values and be yourself.

Salary
Very good salary for a graduate. I get overtime when I work it which is great. In my team, there is also weekend work available which pays well. CSL shares at discount. Perkbox platform with points given each month to get vouchers or discounts. Employees can send each other points for doing good work. Various partnerships with businesses for discounts. Discounted lunch at canteen.

Being a pharmaceutical company, there is a lot of training required but you are given the right tools and guidance to do so. In addition, as part of the graduate program, there are a few development modules which are a great growth opportunity,

Being a global company, sometimes I am required to take early morning/late night calls. As such, it is normal for people to start late/leave early and up to people to manage their time accordingly. I think as long as you are delivering on your objectives, that is what matters. Quite flexible, able to work overtime some days and make up for it on other days by leaving early.

Sustainability
There is a 2030 goal in place for the company to reduce emissions and the carbon footprint. These are mainly in supply chain areas, as many of the processes can be energy intensive and cannot be changed due to the regulatory nature of them.
