Once we arrived at the underground office, team will sort out the required permits and isolation for the shift. I’d take this opportunity to complete a safety audit and go through the project QA documents.

4.00 AM

Getting out of bed slightly earlier today to attend the 6am pre-start on site. Quick glance at my email and checking the shift report from night shift in case they needed anything urgent. Double checking my work bag to make sure I’ve got everything I need for the day, jump in the Monos ute and head off to site. The Olympic Dam mine is approx. 20-min drive from the nearby township of Roxby Down where I stay.

6.00 AM

Catching up with the team and kick off pre-start meeting. We would normally go through safety/cultural share, progress completed and planned works for the day. We will then collect our underground PPE (cap lamp, self-rescuer) and head straight underground.

Once we arrived at the underground office, team will sort out the required permits and isolation for the shift. I’d take this opportunity to complete a safety audit and go through the project QA documents. Catch up with my clients briefly and discuss our plans for the upcoming fortnight.

Once we have the clearance from the area owner, we’ll head down to the job front and get our hands dirty! My typical day would look something like this:

  • Site measurements
  • Identify and addressing discrepancies
  • Identify defects outside of agreed Scope.
  • Scope and compile methodology for client to review

11.00 AM

Finally back on the surface! Got changed into clean offsite PPE and head offsite to Monos office and start smashing out emails. The mining industry is very fast-paced, so time management is crucial in our day to day!

I will pop by the fabrication workshop regularly to check on their progress, and liaising with workshop supervisor on delivery deadlines and milestones etc.

12.00 PM

I would normally have lunch at my desk or treat myself to some hot food at the nearby bakery.

2.00 PM

Time to dial into the weekly meeting with our client. We provide updates on our progress, forecast on the project and raise potential disruption. It’s very important we maintain a long-term relationship with our clients, hence the team maintains a high regard for safety and quality with everything we do.

5.00 PM

Time to knock off!

My housemate will more than likely drag me to the gym for a brief workout before heading back to our share house. We’ll have dinner and chill out for a bit before heading to bed.
